• Notes

  What happened to Alice is unclear. At the time of the 1881 census, she and her husband Tom Singleton were childless and living together. However they had a lodger Eliza Newby, who had been widowed 5 years and yet had a young baby, and who married Tom in 1886. Before her marriage to Tom, she had a further baby girl, then in 1885 she had a son, Thomas Newby Singleton. So it is clear that at least one of these 3 children born after her first husband's death was Tom Singleton's. There is a possibilty that Alice died betwen 1881 and 1886, but the death does not appear to have been recorded. She does not appear on any later census, nor obviously on any later death or marriage index, under the name Singleton or Martindale. So it seems likely that she hitched up with someone else and simply assumed his name.
