Family group: All Sarah Bennison's children on a day out, c1927
Family group: All Sarah Bennison's children on a day out, c1927
Sarah Bennison was dead by the time this was taken, but all of her children are on the coach. We have identified only 6 people, the girl sitting right at the back, and the 5 people standing towards the front. They are her daughter Olive Thomas, with husband (to be?) Albert Hulme; and her 2nd husband Roger Foster with 3 children he and Sarah had.

Family group: Arthur Hodges/Charlotte Foster family, c1955
Charlotte was the daughter of John Foster, Dave's great uncle who emigrated to South Africa. Charlotte was born in Liverpool, but then lived all her life in South Africa.

Elder daughter Janice is on the left, Rosemary is on her mother's knee.

Family group: John Foster and his boys, c1950
This photo shows off the car that John won on the football pools in 1946. We were one of the first families in the road to own a car. Almost certainly taken by Mum and almost certainly in North Wales.
Note the damaged rear end. Dad never did pass a driving test.

The children are Olive from Sarah's first marriage to Frederick Thomas, and Roger, Mabel and Jack from her second marriage to Roger Foster.

We were obviously on a caravan holiday, probably in North Wales.

Family group: Joy Ford, her Westhead in-laws and Fosters, 1955
Joy Ford, with her arms wrapped round the dog, was due to marry Bob Westhead (who probably took this photo) the next year. The photo was taken in Berkshire, where a number of Fosters also lived.

The height of luxury, a convertible charabanc! If it rained, hoops were attached to the clips on the side of the vehicle, then the soft top was thrown over it.

We only know 7 of the people on the left of this photo. They are Willie Foster (standing, wearing a waistcoat) and his family, Tom Foster and his family, and Sid Foster.

Fosters on holiday near Colwyn Bay, North Wales, 1949.
The Foster and Westhead families usually spent their holidays together. In the 1940s and early 1950s, these were usually in North Wales.

Fosters, c1900 - but who are they?
Fosters, c1900 - but who are they?
This photo was scanned from a copy, which simply states "Fosters" on the back. Since John Foster and his wife Letitia Stirret had 7 sons (excluding 1 infant death) and 1 daughter, this could be them. It was sent me by Mandy Foster, great granddaughter of Thomas, the eldest son. One of the men - but which one? - is my grandfather William Bruce Foster. The siblings were Tom, born 1867, William 1869, Letitia 1872, Roger 1874, James Edwin 1875, John 1877, Sidney 1881 and Albert 1883.

The 1877 John referred to above is the only brother for whom we KNOW we have photographs. The problem is that John was tall and very slim, and I do not recognise him here. It is possible that he had already emigrated (or was simply missing) when this photo was taken, and that one of the men is perhaps Letitia's husband Robert Jones.

A further possibility is that the woman in the picture is not Letitia, but is Tom's wife Jessie.

This looks like a studio photo, possibly to mark his retirement from South African railways.

This is believed to be Letitia (Tish) Foster in the middle. The others are Sid and Elsie Foster.
