- Northwich Guardian Wednesday OCT 19th 1881.
The Fatal Fall Downstairs at Northwich.
On Saturday afternoon, Mr Blunt, deputy coroner, held an inquest at the White Lion Inn, Witton Street, Northwich, on the body of Catherine Dignum, a widow, 54 years of age, residing at White Lion Court, who met her death by a fall downstairs on Wednesday night. - The next witness called was Mr Thomas Dignum, labourer, who stated that he lived at York Buildings, Witton, and that the deceased was his mother. he last saw her alive about three o'clock on the afternoon of the 12th inst., in Witton Street. Thomas Burgess came to inform him about 9.15 the same night that his mother was dead. She was fond of a drop of beer, but he could not say that she was drunk that day. She was not drunk when he saw her, but she had had some drink. - Thomas Burgess, labourer, White Lion Court, said that he lodged with the deceased. The last time he saw her alive was about 7.45 on Wednesday evening, when she told him that she would go to bed if he would straighten it for her, which he did. She went to bed in witness's presence and he left her there quite comfortable. She had had a little drink that night, but she was not drunk. She could walk steadily and did so in going upstairs. She sometimes would go to bed early and sometimes late. She did not complain of being unwell. Witness was called by some men to attend a meeting, which at first he refused, but having mentioned the matter to her, she advised him to go, and he went out at eight o'clock and returned exactly at nine. She told him to lock the door in going out, and he did so. When he came back, he struck a match to light a candle, when he saw the deceased lying quite dead at the bottom of the stairs. She lay with her head in one corner of the stairs, and on the left shoulder. he called in a neighbour and went for Dr Joynson - Fanny Hutchins spoke to seeing the deceased lying dead on the floor with her face bleeding. She was on her back, with one hand under her. - Dr Joynson, said he was called to the deceased's house, where he found her lying dead, but not in the opposition described by the previous witness. She had a wound on her left cheek bone. He noticed that there was an iron bar across the bottom of the stairs, and he was of the opinion that falling down stairs, and she being a heavy woman, her coming into contact with this iron caused her death. - By the Deputy Coroner: I did not ascertain whether her neck was dislocated or not, because the last time I made an examination I was reprimanded by the Coroner for doing so without his instruction. - The Deputy Coroner said he was sorry for that, but he would not have been reprimanded by him that day. - The jury, having been shortly addressed by Mr Blunt, returned a verdict of "accidental death".
