  • Notes
    • (Medical):Sid was invalided out of the army during WWI, suffering from the effects of mustard gas. He
    • Sid fought in the great war and was a private in the 8th (Irish) King's Liverpool, Lancashire, UK Regiment.
      His army number was 4182.

He enlisted in the 8th Irish Batallion of the King's Liverpool, Lancashire, UK Regiment on 3rd May 1915. Army records confirm his home address as 11, Dinorban Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, UK. Age was 33 years and 9 months at enlistment. He was 5'4" in height with good physical development, blue eyes and dark hair.

The batallion was known as the 3rd/8th as he was part of the third wave of troops who joined the front.
His occupation was stated as 'carter'. He went to France on 3 Sep 1915 from Southhampton and joined the batallion in the field on 23 Oct 1915. He was deprived of seven days pay on 26 Nov 1915 for being late to 'stand to'.

On 3-4 Dec 1915 a fall of earth buried him in his dug out and a lump of earth struck him over his left eye and caused a wound. He was able to dig himself out without assistance but a fortnight later began to lose his sight. He was admitted to the 1/3 Highland Field ambulance (Millencourt) on 14 Dec 1915 and was diagnosed with bronchitis. From there he was transferred to the Highland casualty clearing station at Villiers Bocage on 15 Dec 1915. Admitted to the general hospital in Rouen on 18 Dec 1915 (undiagnosed) and transferred to England on 26 Dec 1915, he was treated in hospital for bronchitis and a rupture as well as partial loss of sight.

He was discharged on 10 Aug 1916 for partial loss of sight and a rupture and was described as nearly blind ( Soldiers Papers National Archive WO364).

An official stamp on his discharge papers dated April 1922 shows his war service entitled him to 1914-15 star, British War medal and a Victory medal.
