  Married: The 2 girls born in this "marriage" were in fact born several years before the marriage took place. It is therefore possible that they were not Ansel's daughters but were the daughters of another man or men. On the 1881 census, they are listed with the surname "Woolhead" and described as "daughters of wife". It appears from this that they were not Ansel's daughters. Amy's birth certificate and Mary Ann's christening record in the parish records give no indication as to the identity of their father(s). However, the assumption has been made that Ansel WAS the girls' father for the following reasons. His family and Rachel's family lived only a few doors away from each other. Also, at the time of her marriage in 1890, Amy gave Smith as her surname and gave her father's name as Ansel.
